Yesterday I went to Hiro-Omote Elementary School with another American and 2 British students to assist with students's English classes. I was assigned to three different second grade classes, and helped them learn to say the names of different animals in English. We practiced saying "What animal do you like?" and "I like ___," and let me tell you, it was the time of my life. Japanese second graders are SO cute! After the first class the children had some time to play, and I was immediately swarmed and asked many questions. My hair was played with and one girl showed me her scary book. A girl from the third class tried to hug me a couple of times, which was really cute and unexpected. Really, I felt like a celebrity with all of these children clapping when they saw me and wanting to interact. Besides myself, the other 3 international students had fun experiences as well, and upon leaving the school, we were each given 2000 yen (roughly $20) gift cards for use at bookstores across Japan.
We were able to participate in this event through an office at AIU called RCOS. I can't remember what it stands for, but we are always getting emails about new activities we can sign up for. These often involved speaking English with students at elementary or primary schools, but include other events as well, such as welcoming groups to AIU, or participating in cultural activities.
