Every year, AIU hosts a 2-day festival in which thousands of people enjoy a variety of foods and performances. Students work incredibly hard for months in preparation. After having experienced and participated in the festival and festival preparation, I honestly feel like I'm going to school with Japan's most talented students. I apologize for not having more pictures of their art work posted here!
Since I was involved with a few different groups, my weekend was pretty busy. Aside from eating delicious foods and watching performances, my time was mostly spent volunteering at different locations. At the International Flea Market, I helped sell postcards and other small goods that international students brought from their home countries. In the International Cafe, I assisted in preparing and giving out coffee, teas, and snacks from various parts of the world. On the second day of the festival, I had a shift at the "Abandoned Hotel" themed Haunted House, which I was involved in setting up. Another place I had shifts was with a group giving out samples of sake, amazake, and Japanese pickles. This group was promoting upcoming Akita Brewing Festival.
On the first day, I participated in a speed coke drinking competition, which was fun but not my forte. Actually, I was the slowest coke drinker, and I somehow thought I had a chance beforehand!
A major highlight for me was getting to visit with my friends Tuna and Maiko who studied abroad at Gonzaga, and have since graduated from AIU. Mom - they were very excited to eat the chips you sent!
