AIU students participate in a variety clubs ranging from Handball to Rock Band club and many traditional Japanese activities. Thus far, I've been an active member in both Esperanza (the women's futsal club), and the Bible Study club. At the beginning of the semester, I was going to Hopping Runners (the running club), but haven't been able to go lately because the running times were scheduled at the same time that I had practices for futsal and meetings for Bible study. Running times are being adjusted due to changing weather and daylight, so I might be able to participate more often in the future. Recently, I joined the A Capella club, and the first group I'm singing with will be doing the Circle of Life.
The weekend after the AIU Festival was another busy one for me. On Saturday, I was a volunteer at the Akita Brewing Festival with that group I talked about in my last blog post. As a volunteer, sake sampling was free for me, but I was more into pouring it than actually drinking it. My first shift of the day was just emptying garbage bins as they filled up. Then the cool part came and I got to pour sake for the festival-goers, a group which included other AIU students and even some professors! On that Sunday, Esperanza had it's first game of the semester, and apparently its first win since the club came into existence. As basically the only person on the team who doesn't mind playing goalie, that was my position during the game. Although I hadn't played goalie before, I think that my experience playing basketball and softball was useful in this position. There is only one more game this semester and it's in December. I'm not sure if I will play goalie again or not in that game, because ideally the team wants a long-term goalie to step forward, not someone who is only here for one semester. We'll see though!
I've finished my mid-terms now, and will be registering soon for my spring classes at Gonzaga. Time flies! Speaking of Gonzaga though, last Friday AIU held it's study abroad fair, and I got to represent Gonzaga for a few hours. I hope we get some AIU students at GU!
